Taking the time to move is always a hectic period of your life. Whether you are simply moving across town or to another state, you need to make sure that you are taking all of the aspects of your life and are carefully transporting them. This is why you may need to learn how to move a refrigerator without damaging it. This special attention will need to be paid if you want to successfully move with the great refrigerator that you have and not have to worry about causing any unnecessary damage.

The important thing to remember is that a refrigerator, despite being tall and heavy, is somewhat of a delicate appliance. You should keep it standing tall unless absolutely necessary, and even so, you should never lay it fully down. If moving is going to take you a while, you will need to make sure that you let the doors stay open, so they can aerate a bit. This will prevent the buildup and growth of mildew, which can damage your refrigerator.

You will also want to make sure that you take care of all of the pieces inside of the refrigerator. Secure the shelves, doors, handles, and compartments. Jostling around during moving can damage these pieces and potentially leave you with a broken refrigerator. You should take the time to carefully plan this moving.

What is the Proper Way to Start a Move?
When you first realize that moving your refrigerator is going to be necessary, you should start by removing all of the contents from your refrigerator. Hopefully, you have been planning ahead and do not have that many items within. All of the perishable items will probably have to be disposed of.

Once this is finished, you should remove the shelves if possible. This will prevent the bumping, dropping, and potential smashing of these shelving units. Even though you will be working on securing the refrigerator as much as possible, bumps in the road could still cause damage to the shelves. Not only will it be easier to move the refrigerator without the shelves, but you will be able to keep the shelves safer.

Before you move it, you should also put your refrigerator through a defrosting cycle, so it does not start cooling off and end up dumping water all over your floor. Defrosting your refrigerator will allow you to prepare the model to be immediately moved. Once the fridge has been fully thawed, you will be ready to begin preparing the refrigerator.

Securing the Refrigerator
When you are figuring out how to move a refrigerator, you will need some way to secure the refrigerator. Should the move take you more than a day to complete, you should make sure that the doors of the refrigerator will be propped open. You can typically achieve this by rolling up a towel and sticking it inside of the door, blocking the door from fully closing.

The doors to your refrigerator will need to be fully secured anyway, so this can help make sure that the doors will stay open while not flopping around. Most people will either tape or tie the doors down, making sure they do not have too much room to move. Be careful, however, for if you tie the door too tightly, you could risk damaging the hinges of the door and setting it off kilter.

Moving the Refrigerator
You should always make sure that you are moving the refrigerator with at least one other person. A refrigerator will be a very heavy unit and could cause a lot of damage to your body. There is not only a risk of throwing out your back by attempting to lift too much weight, but improper lifting could force the refrigerator to topple over. Should this fall on you, the unit could cause serious harm to your body.

Care is also needed to keep the refrigerator upright. There is oil located in the compressor and unless the unit is kept in an upright position, that oil could leak out into the other pipes and valves. This will cause your refrigerator to work improperly. If you cannot fully leave a refrigerator upright, it is important that you at least tilt it into as much of an upright position as is possible.

If you follow all of these rules on how to move a refrigerator, you should easily be able to take your most important appliance anywhere. A little care, patience, and teamwork will be all that is needed. Do it the right way the first time, and you will find the work is done more quickly than you expected.
